Between agency tours and networking events, it’s about time to start developing your professional wardrobe. Last week Sophie Klimkiewicz, Career Connector at GVSU's Career Center, gave us some great tips regarding Dressing for Success. Making a good impression doesn’t have to be expensive! To prove it, I went out and bought an entire outfit for less than $15.
Two great places to shop on a college budget include Goodwill and Plato’s Closet. These secondhand stores always have great deals and more often than not have great pieces to add to your professional closet. Personally, I go to Goodwill for blazers and layering tops. I usually have the best luck finding slim fitting pants and shoes at Plato’s Closet.
Except for the shoes (which I already owned), all of the pieces were found at Goodwill of Greater Grand Rapids:
- The first piece I picked up was an Ann Taylor tank, a steal for only $3.99! It was in perfect condition and the print makes it perfect for layering under a black blazer.
- Next I found this pair of skinny black pants. Originally from Delia’s, this pair of pants has a casual feel and a professional look for just $3.99.
- My favorite piece I found was this Ann Taylor blazer for $5.99! The leather shoulders add just enough detail to show some style but not so much that it’s distracting.
With tax, this outfit totaled only $14.76!
Like Sophie said, make sure to add a little bit of your own style into your outfit. I personally went for dark neutrals and included my favorite fall color with the shoes.
