Many Grand Valley students join PRSSA specifically for the agency tours that are offered to members. Being the Vice President of Professional Development, I was given the opportunity to plan agency tours.
This year I wanted to provide different opportunities for our members, including those who are not specifically PR majors. To appeal to all members, we went on dozens of agency tours in Grand Rapids, but we also toured “untraditional” PR workplaces.
For example, we went on tours of local media outlets including mLive, WGVU and WZZM. This experience was beneficial for all in attendance because it provided insight to the media and journalism industries. Plus, I don’t know how many of you have been in mLive Grand Rapids, but their space is so innovative and new that it was even exciting just to be there.
Most recently we wanted to appeal to our marketing and sports management students, so we toured the Grand Rapids Griffins at the Van Andel Arena. This experience was awesome, not just because we got to watch the Griffins practice and see their locker room (which was my personal favorite), but also because members were able to learn about their dynamic work environment; we got a glimpse of what it’s like to work at a job that requires more than just an 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. time commitment.
From Detroit to Chicago, PRSSA members toured potential work places. Detroit tours were unique for our members because of the different opportunities provided from Quicken Loans, Blue Cross Blue Shield and Team Detroit. Thanks to DePaul’s chapter of PRSSA, Chicago was also a success with tours to local PR agencies like Edelman and Fleishman Hillard, to name a few.
Thank you to all of the organizations that hosted GV PRSSA this year. The expertise that was shared from professionals everywhere has definitely made a difference with our members. I am confident that agency tours will be great again next year, so some advice from me to you: sign up!
